Abstract

Background: Shift work is prevalent among nurses, necessitating round-the-clock patient care but often leading to disruptions in sleep patterns, increased risk of mental health issues, and disturbances in physiological rhythms. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between sleep quality, depressive symptoms, physiological markers of stress, and circadian rhythm regulation among nurses working rotating shifts.

Methodology: A prospective case-control study was conducted, involving 20 female night shift nurses and 20 age-matched female day work nurses with normal sleep rhythms. Participants completed standardized questionnaires to assess sleep quality and mood, and serum melatonin and cortisol levels were measured.

Results: The results revealed a moderate positive correlation between poor sleep quality and increased depressive symptoms (r = 0.52, p < 0.05). Additionally, significant positive correlations were found between poor sleep quality and elevated serum cortisol levels (r = 0.44, p < 0.05), as well as between poor sleep quality and decreased serum melatonin levels (r = -0.38, p < 0.05). These findings underscore the complex interplay between shift work, sleep quality, mental health, and physiological functioning among nurses.

Conclusion: Understanding these relationships is critical for developing targeted interventions to support nurses in managing the challenges associated with shift work and promoting their overall health and resilience in clinical practice.
