Abstract

Background: Sex education is crucial for the development of informed and responsible individuals, particularly among nursing students who will play key roles in healthcare. Despite its importance, the perspectives on sex education vary significantly among students from different socio-economic backgrounds and educational institutions.

Objective: This study aims to explore the perspectives and attitudes of nursing students from different institutes in Karachi, Pakistan, regarding school-based sex education. It seeks to understand their views on the appropriate age and grade for introducing sex education and the importance of various sex education topics.

Methodology: Data was collected from 100 nursing students from various institutes in Karachi, Pakistan, between January 2024 and April 2024. A structured questionnaire was used to gather information on demographics, socio-economic status, opinions on the necessity and timing of sex education, and the relevance of specific sex education topics.

Results: The majority of respondents (65%) were aged 18-22 years, with 60% female and 40% male participants. Most students (55%) were from government institutes, and 60% belonged to joint families. 80% of respondents supported introducing sex education at an early age. The primary reasons cited included the need to protect from disease (45%) and to prevent AIDS (60%). Most students (50%) felt that sex education should start in grades 9-12, with significant emphasis on topics like menstruation, personal safety, and sexually transmitted diseases.

Conclusion: The study underscores the need for comprehensive sex education in nursing curricula, given the significant support among nursing students for early and detailed sex education. Incorporating these topics into nursing education will better prepare students to handle sexual health issues in their professional careers and contribute to broader public health education efforts.
