Exploring the Perception of Medical Students Regarding the Use of ChatGPT in Research Writing

Abstract

Background: Given the growing prominence of AI technologies in academia and the critical importance of research writing skills in medical education, it becomes imperative to examine how medical students perceive and utilize AI-powered writing assistance tools. This research paper investigates the perceptions of medical students regarding the utilization of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence-based language model, in their research writing endeavors. Methodology: This study employed a mixed-methods approach to explore medical students' perceptions of using ChatGPT in research writing. By combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, the research aims to capture a comprehensive understanding of students' attitudes, experiences, and concerns regarding AI-assisted writing tools.
Results: Many respondents expressed optimism about ChatGPT's potential to enhance their efficiency in research writing. A common sentiment among participants was the belief that using ChatGPT would lead to higher-quality research papers. Respondents generally found ChatGPT to be user-friendly and intuitive. Many participants expressed confidence in their ability to quickly grasp the functionalities of ChatGPT for research writing. A significant number of respondents indicated their intentions to incorporate ChatGPT into their research writing practices in the future. Several participants expressed their willingness to recommend ChatGPT to their peers for research writing tasks.
Conclusion: The findings shed light on the potential benefits, challenges, and ethical considerations associated with AI-assisted writing tools in medical education.
