Abstract

Since the invention of artificial intelligence (AI), its applications have grown in a quickly changing digital ecosystem where public expectations are rising, fueled by social media, industrial leaders, and medical practitioners. However, there has been an interest in AI in medical education until the last two decades, with modest growth in the number of papers and citations in the field. To be effectively prepared for AI, medical educators are suggested to have at least a basic understanding of AI in connection to learning and teaching and the extent to which it will impact medical education. The current commentary focuses on the fact that aside from a basic understanding of health sciences and their relationship to clinical sciences, the medical education curriculum for the twenty-first century must include topics that will help future healthcare providers practice in a data-rich environment supported by AI.
