Abstract

In critical care, the significant elevation in intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) leads to the development intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH), that may cause multiple organ failure and lead to significant chances of mortality. Although healthcare staff, particularly critical care nurses (CCNs), typically lack expertise and experience in handling intra-abdominal Hypertension (IAH). This study examined the knowledge of critical care nurses on measurement of intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) at tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. A one-month cross-sectional study was conducted at Ziauddin Hospital Clifton Karachi, n = 37 critical care nurses from medical and surgical critical care units participated in the research. Participant’s knowledge of IAH was assessed using an adopted questionnaire and specified criteria. Demographical data were collected to assess knowledge score relationships. All critical care nurses scored below the acceptable level, indicating a lack of IAH monitoring knowledge. Gender, age, degree, area of employment, and professional experience did not affect knowledge ratings of CCNs. This highlights the need for targeted education assistance to CCNs regarding understanding and measurement of IAH. The study also investigates the clinical importance of intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) emphasizing their negative effects on patient outcomes and the necessity for early detection and monitoring. Uniform diagnostic criteria, stringent procedure adherence, and continual education may bridge the gap between scientific findings and practical application.
